However, recent changes in Maryland law allow couples to divorce without having a third party witness testify regarding when the last time the couple slept under the same roof. The initial law was intended to prevent the divorce of a couple that was continuing to engage in sexual relations. The new law makes the process less cumbersome, less intrusive, and less painful. "Some divorcing spouses and divorce attorneys found that the witness requirement was not just inconvenient but also painful."
